Best US Business Bank Accounts for Non-Residents in 2026: Mercury vs Relay vs Wise

An independent comparison of US business accounts for non-US residents and foreign-owned LLCs — Mercury, Relay, and Wise — checked against each provider's own eligibility pages, and why Novo is not an option for non-residents.

Opening a US business bank account as a non-resident is one of the most common challenges international founders face after forming their LLC. Several modern providers let you apply entirely online, with no in-person visit. Each one sets its own rules for owners who live outside the US, though, and those rules are checked below against each provider's own help pages (September 2026).

This guide compares three options for foreign-owned LLCs in 2026: Mercury, Relay, and Wise. It also explains why Novo, often recommended to international founders, is not available to them.

Quick Comparison

| | Mercury | Relay | Wise | Novo | |---|---|---|---|---| | Monthly Fee | $0 (base plan) | $0 (Grow: $30) | No monthly fee listed; one-time fee to get account details | — | | Non-Resident Owners Accepted | ✅ (needs existing or planned US operations) | ⚠️ Only with an operating presence in the US | ⚠️ Services limited if your business's registered and trading addresses are in different countries | ❌ (US residence + SSN required) | | FDIC Insurance | Through partner banks (Mercury is not a bank) | Through Thread Bank (Relay is not a bank) | ❌ (except USD in the opt-in interest feature) | — | | Physical Debit Card | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | — | | International Transfers | Not reviewed here | Limited | ✅ Excellent | — | | Best For | Non-resident founders with US operations | Multi-account businesses | Global payments | US-resident owners only |

Mercury — Best Overall for Non-Resident LLCs

Mercury is a fintech company that offers US business accounts. It states that it is "not an FDIC insured bank"; banking services are "provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC." (Mercury Help Center)

What makes Mercury stand out for non-residents:

  • Mercury says: "You do not need to be a U.S. citizen or resident to apply." (eligibility and requirements)
  • Your business must "Be formed and registered in the United States or a U.S. territory" and "Have existing or planned operations in the U.S."
  • Your principal place of business can be "a U.S. or international address", but "registered agent addresses, P.O. boxes, and UPS Store addresses are not" accepted.
  • The base plan is "$0/mo", and Mercury says it has no "minimum account balance requirements, overdraft fees, required monthly fees, or account opening fees" (Mercury pricing). Paid plans (Plus, Pro) are optional.

The catch: If your business has no US workplace, no owner living in the US and no owner with a US-issued ID, Mercury "may request additional verification" of your US operations, such as a sale to a US customer or a contract with a US partner. Mercury adds: "If you don’t operate in the U.S., don’t plan to, or don’t have qualifying documentation, your account may be locked or eventually closed." (Verifying your U.S. business operations) Founders in some countries are not eligible. Check Mercury's prohibited countries list before you apply.

Who it's best for: Non-resident founders whose US LLC sells to, buys from or otherwise deals with the US, and who want a no-monthly-fee US account.

Relay — Best for Multiple Accounts and Cash Flow Management

Relay is a business banking platform built specifically for small businesses that want to organize their cash flow across multiple accounts.

What makes Relay stand out:

  • The Starter plan ($0/month) includes 20 checking accounts (Relay pricing)
  • Create separate accounts for taxes, payroll, and operating expenses
  • Relay is "not an FDIC-insured bank"; banking services are "provided by Thread Bank, Member FDIC"
  • Relay says it "accepts U.S.-registered businesses owned by non-U.S. citizens or residents, provided the business has an operating presence in the U.S." (Required documents by entity type)

The catch: Relay's own help pages are not consistent on non-resident owners. The documents page asks each beneficial owner for an "SSN or passport number" and a "Physical U.S. address (no PO boxes, no virtual mailboxes)". Relay's account-opening guide says "every beneficial owner must have a valid SSN" (How to open a Relay business account). If your legal address is a registered agent address, you must also give "an operational business address where actual business activity occurs", and it cannot be another registered agent address. Confirm with Relay before applying if you have no SSN and no US address. Relay's international wire transfers are also more limited than Wise's.

Who it's best for: Founders with a real US operating presence who want strict cash flow separation — keeping tax reserves, operating funds, and savings completely separate.

Wise Business — Best for International Payments

Wise (formerly TransferWise) is not a bank. In Wise's words: "We’re not a bank, but we are regulated like one." It offers an account that lets you make payments, get paid and spend "in over 40 currencies" (Wise Help Centre).

What makes Wise stand out:

  • Hold and convert money in 40+ currencies, and get account details to receive money in 22 currencies (Wise US business pricing)
  • Conversions at the mid-market exchange rate, with the fee shown upfront
  • Holding money in the account is free, and no monthly fee is listed on Wise's US business pricing page. Signing up is free, "but there's a fee to get account details", and "The fee depends on where your business is registered" (Fees for using Wise Business). For a US-registered business, the US pricing page lists 31 USD.
  • Wise Multi-Currency Card for spending
  • Ideal for businesses with clients or suppliers in multiple countries
